Clos Montmartre Harvest Festival: A Celebration of Wine and Tradition

Since 1934, the wine harvest and the arrival of the new cuvee of le Clos Montmartre is celebrated in October during 5 days. It is a popular and traditional, even folkloric, village festival where gastronomy and wine are honored.

AN OLD TRADITION

It was during the 12th century that vines were planted by the nuns of the Abbey of Montmartre. Later on, the impoverishment of the abbey led to the sale of its vineyard plots, and in the 18th century the hilltop was covered with 3/4 of vines around which prospered taverns and cabarets.

When Montmartre was connected to Paris in 1860, housing developed to the detriment of the vines, which disappeared completely in 1928.

AN OLD TRADITION

Upon the initiative of the painter Poublot, among others, the prefect of la Seine declared the current terrain of le Clos de Montmartre unbuildable in order to protect the site against real estate investment. In 1933, the city of Paris created le Clos by planting 2,000 vines.

The first wine harvest festival was held in 1934, sponsored by Mistinguett and Fernandel.
